Story - Did Muniraj do the right thing?

Home > Magazine > English Magazine > > Story

Story Corner

In a forest, a Muni Maharaj is doing sadhana. He is standing in Kayotsarg. At that time, a deer runs past him and turns left. A hunter, chasing the deer to kill it, asks the Muni Maharaj: "Which way did the deer go?" The Muni Maharaj says: "To the right." And the hunter runs to the right to find the deer.

So, wouldn't the Sadhu Maharaj incur the sin of lying? The deer actually went to the left, so why did the Muni Maharaj say right? If the Muni Maharaj had said left, the hunter would have found, caught, and killed the deer. It appears like a lie, but in reality, he saved the deer's life, hence it is not called 'Mrushavaad'.

It is written in a Gujarati couplet:

'કાણાને નવિ કાણો કહીયે. કડવા લાગે વેણ।

ધીમે રહીને પૂછીએ, શાને ખોયા નેણ।'

Anything you say that hurts the other person is all Mrushavaad! That's why, one should not call a blind person 'blind' or a one-eyed person 'one-eyed'.
