(2) Mrushavaad Viraman Mahavrat: Mrusha = Lie. Vaad = To speak. Viraman = To stop. Mrushavaad Viraman Mahavrat means to abstain from speaking lies.

When does a person speak a lie? The answer is found in Jain scriptures. There could be any one of the following four reasons behind speaking a lie:

4 Reasons for Speaking a Lie (1) Anger (Krodh), (2) Greed (Lobh), (3) Fear (Bhay), (4) Humour (Hasya).

Save this much in your memory: Just like speaking a lie is Mrushavaad, similarly, Speaking words or sentences that cause pain to the other person, such unpleasant and harmful words are also Mrushavaad!
