Story - Consequences of not obeying the Guru

Home > Magazine > English Magazine > > Story

Story Corner

This incident happened during the rule of the Prabhu Mahavir Swami. An Acharya Bhagwant was travelling with a large group of disciples. One of the disciples was named Shivbhuti.

Once, it so happened that the king of a town gifted Muni Shivbhuti a shawl called Ratnakambal. The shawl was worth 1 lakh gold coins. Shivbhuti became very attached to this expensive shawl. He started keeping it hidden from everyone's eyes, carefully protecting it. He was constantly worried that it might get stolen.

Seeing this, the Guru said, 'Shivbhuti! A sadhu should not keep such an expensive item.' But, Shivbhuti liked the Ratnakambal so much that he did not listen to the Guru. Once, when Shivbhuti was out somewhere, the Guru, seeing the opportunity, tore the Ratnakambal into pieces. So that the reason for Shivbhuti's attachment would be gone! When Shivbhuti came back, he was furious to see the pieces of the Ratnakambal, but he could not say anything to the Guru. While studying the scriptures with the Guru, when the topic of 'Jinkalp' came up, Shivbhuti argued with the Guru, 'Attachment, possessiveness and infatuation are not only with the Ratnakambal, are they?

It can be with anything that is kept with us. Therefore, in reality, one should not keep any clothes at all, not just the Ratnakambal. Because, like the Ratnakambal, one can become attached to any cloth.' The Guru tried to explain to Shivbhuti that the Ratnakambal is a 'luxury', clothes are a 'necessity'. But how could Shivbhuti understand the Guru's words?

He immediately renounced all clothes and went away. He started a new sect. That new sect is Digambar! The Guru had told him not to keep the Ratnakambal, but he still kept it, that is Guru Adatt! You saw the result of Guru Adatt, didn't you? He started his own separate sect!
