 Story of Mahavir Swami Bhagwan

After taking the vow of renunciation, Prabhu Mahavir Swami practiced austerities in the forest. During his 12.5 years of penance, he only ate meals for 349 days. These meals were not like our normal ones, they were solitary! Along with his austerities, Prabhu Mahavir endured many hardships and trials.

One day, while he was standing in deep meditation, a cowherd arrived. He asked Prabhu Mahavir to look after his cattle and went about his work. He returned shortly, but his cattle were missing! Prabhu Mahavir was engrossed in his meditation, so how could he have looked after the cattle?

The cowherd asked: “Hey, where did my cattle go?”

Since Prabhu Mahavir was in deep meditation, he didn’t respond. He neither spoke nor gestured.

The cowherd asked twice or thrice, but got no response. Enraged, he yelled: “You seem to be deaf! Can’t you hear me asking you something? What use are these two ears of yours?”

He then took two large iron nails from nearby and hammered them into Prabhu Mahavir’s ears. He hammered them so deep that the nails pierced through both ears and met inside!

Why did Prabhu Mahavir have to suffer such pain by having nails hammered into his ears?

Prabhu Mahavir didn’t do anything wrong, but in his 18th previous birth as Vasudev, he had poured molten lead into a sleeping guard’s ears. The karma he created then manifested as this suffering of having nails hammered into his ears.

Children!

The time of Paryushan is upon us. During these days, Prabhu Mahavir Swami’s entire life is narrated in the sermons. There are many such incidents where Prabhu Mahavir experienced the fruits of his past karma.

Even Tirthankars are not exempt from karma.
